          1995-1996

Well time they say waits for no one and when its time to reflect on events, functions and numerous runs that one partakes of, for someone who has been around since the second run of NorWest Hash with some previous hash experience with the Veterans Hash and Auckland Mens, some serious thinking needs to be done.

For the records my hashing started with the Veterans Hash with Red Rooter, Nellie, Hertz, Pongo, Mopiko, Mary Poppins - just to name a few and not leaving out Lion Red or Red Lyon or Loosie as he may be known to most as he introduced me to this social club of drinking runners. It was perhaps timely that NorWest was established with Butcher Bill, Rosco and Catweasel together starting a new era for Scruffy as he was perhaps looking for new horizons or challenges.

Early years of NorWest to me ware super, great, as the comaradery which began to establish with a lot of new young interesting hashers coming to the established Gourmet Hash - Some Mothers, Mummy, Sharpie, Polly, Jaybees. I think that to recall some notable functions I remember, firstly NorWest 69th run set up with mud wrestlers an event that some of us member because of injuries incurred - Sharpie, mud in the ear ( I think on recollection this may have effected his balance on life). Scruffy kneecapped in the mud wrestly pit with Hertz (from here on a continued problem). I know there are many other stories from this function but some may “never be reported”.

During the reign of Some Mothers, NorWest was very social, exciting to be out with and I met and associated with some many fine people - bus trips to Hamilton, seafood nites at Huapai and sleeping on garage floors with Mummy tucking me up with newspaper being ~worried about the concrete floor. NorWest was now becoming the Gourmet Hash that travels about enjoying sociale events of the year no matter where!!

I recall a trip to Welling expecting an exciting weekend but turned out all a little different - rain and windy conditions, the hangi was a damp situation ending up with a substitute feed, disorganisation complete. I therefore recall nil to report there.

NorWest ware now an event to note all of their own on tour with some of our hussies performing most effectively - Schwartz, Titz, Clawed, Headspin, Groper. With the introduction of NWH3 touch at Waitemata Park with Mr. Meat & Scruffy teaming up to perhaps attract some adding comaradery some aspiring players wanting additional training in their Ball skills -hussies to recall being Treasures, Polly Filler, Clawed. Now these touch games were sometimes followed by the gate crashing on the ladies wine nites - interesting times

NorWest annual Riverhead forest event was a team effort - champagne breakfasts, live music, jazz bands, wake up calls, communal showers, chain saw wake ups.

I with several others from NorWest travelled to Phuket to help support the NZ application for Inter Hash. This was a great adventure with some great people from all over New Zealand -those who want know who they ware - a most enjoyable trip.

Another event to capture my enthusiasm was Romp in the Swamp - Marlborough Hash NZ Easter’?? MHHH 600th - NorWest I believe had more hashers there than any other hash represented.

Amazingly it was from Marlborough H3 when NorWest ware on tour of the south that Rigor the then GM actually asked Scruffy to consider being NorWest GM. I said I would give him an answer after the South Island tour giving me time to assess the GM’s responsibilities as there were several ex GMs on tour - so I assessed their skills and the outcome we all know - I accepted and at first the job was a personal challenge - how to be in charge. I was able to find my own way and thus by the end of term I was enjoying the responsibility, had good raport with my committee and with reluctance passed on the Sharpie who as I understand had been asked several times but for reasons of his own was reluctant to take on until Scruffy approached a great mate to follow up.

Since my GM’s era NorWest have travelled to Aussie Nash Hash - yet another memorable event. The most memorable event I have had to encounter was NZ Inter Hash, Rotorua when together with all the Veterans Hash I was able to be joint trailmaster for an international event -an event of the decade.

With this 10 years of hash, NorWest I wish you yet another 10 years of great times, local and away and away internationally. These last 10 years are years I will cherish as with the many hashers whose friendships I cherish of whom there are many.
