1988-1989
“IN THE BEGINNING”
A large number of Auckland hash runs were over the Shore and who the hell wants to travel over that bridge every Monday nite, get 1/2 cut and drive all the way back to the west again?
So the thought occurred to me that perhaps, may be, there was room in Auckland for a West Hash. The more I though about a West Hash the more sense it made to me.
I discussed my thoughts with THE SHITTER but Max was fully involved with the Auckland Hash House Harriers.
After a few weeks of scheming and dreaming I next approached ROSCOE another “Westy” and he agreed “a great idea” lets do it.
NOR WEST HASH WAS BORN
The next to be involved were CATWEASEL and COLONEL SANDERS. Between the four of us we worked on the creation of “another” Hash House Harriers. Nor West as we called it was to be centered around food so we also called it “The Gourmet Hash”.
I
designed the “Chef’ for the back of the t-shirt and I also designed the
front with the runners copied from a Western Leader
newspaper’s fun run, but I added the Hash beer mug as a traditional hash
drinking symbol. The t-shirt was ready to be printed.
So as not to be in opposition to “Auckland Hash” (my mother hash) we chose Tuesday nite as the nite to run. Three months and a lot of planning our first night was chosen.
12 APRIL 1988
To
officiate the opening, Mayor Tim Shadbolt” was asked to do the honours, which
he did with his usual indulgence and gusto. Seventy plus supporters
(46 signed the book that first night) attended the inaugural run at Soljans
Vineyard.
